Buffalo Point #36 is a major tourist attraction with world-class
development. It boasts the largest harbour on Lake of the Woods in Manitoba
with 320 docking berths. Buffalo point is an international vacation
community with 450 lots, which are leased out on a 75-year basis. There are
presently 300 leased to proud owners from Canada and the US. Some making the
Point a full time resident, with daily mail, hydro, telephone and hi-speed
Internet at their door. Paved and well maintained roads on a 12 month
basis.

Buffalo Point's Diverse Eco System
Buffalo Point has developed a comprehensive wildlife
management program, which attracts many photographers and sightseers. The
main attraction is herds of whitetail deer. Others include wolf, red and
silver fox, black bear, moose, beaver, muskrat and porcupine. Birding is
also a relaxing pastime including: Great Grey Owl, bald and golden eagles,
osprey, blue jays, woodpeckers and finches. Buffalo Point has the rare
honour of having the only sighting of the purple-fringed orchids.
Buffalo Point is proud of its 18 holes “Lake of the Sandhills” championship
golf course with fairways and greens on the shores of Lake of the Woods and

Buffalo Point is becoming one of the major economic centers in South Eastern
Manitoba in the tourism and hospitality area. Buffalo Point hires over 80
full time employees in the summer months creating major economic
possibilities for its residents, the community and the surrounding
municipalities.
A government building constructed to honour the culture of our forefathers stands strikingly beautiful within a well-maintained wooded area. The building has conference facilities, government offices, RCMP office, and a museum, which is open and free to the public.The major economic generators are:

Interesting Facts on Buffalo Point
Buffalo Point has a rich history. For instance, did you know...
- That it is sometimes believed that Buffalo Point received its name from the fact that the peninsula is shaped as the head of a buffalo. In truth, the name (as well as the name Buffalo Bay) comes from buffalo tracks found wallowing in the mud on the shores of Buffalo Point (further enforced by having dredged up a buffalo horn during the construction of the harbour).
- That Buffalo Point is a signatory to Treaty #3 (the only one in Manitoba that is a signatory of Treaty #3 and the only Canadian treaty to be signed on the United States side of the border at the Northwest Angle, Harrison Creek) which was signed on October 3rd, 1873 by Chief Ayashawath.
- That Buffalo Point served as an important gathering place for the Anishinabe people.
- That Lake of the Woods was once called Lake of the Sandhills by the Anishinabe people before being renamed by the Europeans.
- That the Red Cloud Trail dates back to the 1700s and was used by the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota before the Ojibway occupation took place in the mid 1800s.
- That the Buffalo Bay marina is the largest harbour on Lake of the Woods and in Manitoba.
- That the Buffalo Point ‘Master Plan’ was the most comprehensive tourism study ever undertaken in the province.
- That this lake was shallow before flooding and a sandbar connected the peninsula to the mainland and the sand ridge leading south into the United States.
